About Taunton
Taunton is the county town of Somerset and boasts over 1,000 years of military and religious history. A monastery in the town was built in the 10th century, and Taunton Castle has origins going back to the Anglo Saxon period.
Those who treasure the outdoors will adore Taunton for its number of local nature reserves, which are protected sites. Ash Common Nature Reserve was the first of its kind in Taunton and, is still the largest. Weirfield Riverside Nature Reserve is a strip of land next to the River Tone. It has a mixture of habits and is a favourite for families and naturalists alike; particularly the river corridor. The river corridor plays home to bats, otters, and kingfishers, which can often be seen by visitors with keen eyes.
