St Ives Beaches
Porthmeor is St Ives’ Blue Flag Atlantic Ocean family and surfing beach with surf school, fine golden sand, good sunbathing by day and spectacular sunsets. During the summer trained lifeguards ensure the bathing is as safe as possible. There are restaurant and cafe facilities right on the beach; toilets and beach huts on the terrace behind.
Fantastically named Portgwidden is a delightful small and sandy cove linked with beach huts. It is a sun trap and a perfect place to swim, it is just important to keep inside the buoys. The brilliant white terrace houses look down on Porthgwidden Café, and there’s a kiosk for coffee and snacks. Porthgwidden is an ideal beach to catch the morning sun and stay all day.
Another popular beach in St Ives is sheltered Porthminster. The beach boasts half a mile of golden sands, usually with calm sea conditions. The beach is ideal for families and it has a restaurant and café.
Eating and Shopping in St Ives
Many are spoilt for choice when it comes to eating in St Ives. Porthminster Café & Restaurant is a popular beach setting with a menu ruled by the sea. Alba, the refurbished lifeboat house, has great views and food and the Rum & Crab Shack is a friendly place to sample rum and seafood.
St Ives is resplendent with independent butchers, bakers and green grocers. There is also a farmer’s market. Having access to local and fresh produce means that even if eating at home in St Ives, meals can be five-star. Many people banish the traditional supermarket for these establishments.
As you can imagine, St Ives is not big on high street retailers. Instead, boutiques and independent stores selling fashion, jewellery, art, gifts and surf wear line the cobbles.
Transport Links St Ives
St Ives has a train station, albeit consisting of 1 platform. St Ives is the terminus for trains from St Erth and this is the only service, running every half an hour between St Ives and St Erth. However, St Erth opens up opportunities for travel further afield to the likes of Truro, Plymouth and Exeter.
St Ives has a bus station which also acts as a coach terminus National Express services. Coaches from London to St Ives take 8 hours 30 minutes on the fastest service. There are a multitude of local bus routes, with some adjoining other neighbouring towns.
