Moving to Darlington

As more people move to Darlington, new builds are popping up left right and centre. However, it is the period properties that most love and, chances are, you can get your hands on a bargain. The centre of Darlington is rich with Victorian terraces, ideal for first-time buyers. For families, the huge Victorian properties on the edge of town are located in leafy suburbs near some of the best schools.

Prices have gone up in Darlington over the years but it is still more affordable than nearby Newcastle or Durham. There is little reason to purchase a flat in Darlington, when three-bed terraced homes start at £70,000. Small detached homes and semis, ideal for new families, can be snapped up for upwards of £130,000. A budget for large detached family homes should be between £180,000 and £400,000, whereas the huge Victorian homes on the outskirts vary between £380,000 and £500,000.

Those looking to rent in Darlington can secure a one bedroom apartment for under £300 pcm. Traditional two up two down terraces start at around £300 pcm and family-sized semis take this to over £400 pcm. Large detached homes fall into the £750 pcm to £2,000 pcm bracket dependant on condition of the property and location.

Schools in Darlington

There are over 15 primary schools in Darlington but the most popular are Abbey Junior and Holy Family, Cockerton CofE, and Mowden. Abbey Junior is ‘good’ but Cockerton and Mowden are ‘good with some outstanding features’ according to Ofsted.

There are eight secondary schools in Darlington. However, some are considerably better than others. Longfield Academy is ‘good’ according to Ofsted and Hummersknott Academy is ‘good with outstanding features’. However, the two most impressive schools are Carmel College and Hurworth School, which both received ‘outstanding’ across the board in their latest Ofsted inspections.

Darlington Transport Links

Darlington is also served by a number of local and regional buses and the A1(M) is just to the west. Furthermore, Durham Tees Valley airport is just a 20-minute drive away which has national flights and over 200 overseas destinations.
