Moving to Cardiff
Cardiff city is the capital of Wales and is made up of 44 districts. Many assume that the city centre is all that Cardiff has to offer, but this isn’t true. Although the shopping and entertainment facilities are second-to-none, many of the districts of Cardiff are fantastic places to live for different reasons. Cardiff Bay is blessed with the beautiful views and is quickly becoming the city’s cultural hub, Pontprennau is perfect suburbia and, Pontcanna has been voted one of the UK’s most fashionable places to live.
Where Should I Live in Cardiff?
Cyncoed is a sought after location to live in Cardiff, popular with families. Here you will find huge detached homes and tree lined avenues. However, properties here come with the most expensive price tags in the whole of Wales.
Thornhill and Lisvane are two other affluent neighbourhoods and boast a wonderful village atmosphere. They benefit from having easy access to both the city and the countryside and there are many new-build family houses.
Another village-feel area is Llandaff. The historic buildings of Llandaff have been renovated into lovely cafes, bars and restaurants. The properties in this suburb are some of the most aesthetically pleasing in Cardiff.
If your heart is set on a Victorian home, the quiet Penylan would be an ideal location for you. It is one of the most popular areas to live and due to its location atop a hill, it has fantastic views across Cardiff Bay and the Bristol Channel. More Victorian properties can be found in fashionable Pontcanna and many professionals live in this area.
Located in the west of the city centre is Canton. It is a very multicultural area and mostly lived in my students, graduates and young professionals who love the ambience of the area.
If you seek an up-and-coming area in Cardiff, look no further than Grangetown. It is a great place for first-time buyers and young families to get their hands on a property, with rows and rows of Victorian terraces.
Other well-loved areas include the commuter town of Pennarth, Pontprennau, Adamsdown and the Heath.
Things to do in Cardiff
The shopping in Cardiff is a dream come true with three main shopping streets – Queen Street, St Mary’s Street and Hayes- which are full of major retail stores. If the big brands on these streets are not enough, dive into Queens Arcade or St David’s 2; the very popular and very large shopping centres. You cannot miss St David’s; it is right next to the second largest John Lewis outside of London. For independent boutiques and niche businesses, explore the handful of Victorian arcades scattered about the city centre.
If you are not a big fan of shopping but enjoy history, you could visit Cardiff castle or St Fagans National Museum of History. For activities Cardiff has the international white water facility, as well as indoor climbing walls at Boulders, the Ice skating Arena and not forgetting the Dr Who experience for sci-fi fans.
