The ancient County of Glamorgan is split into different divisions was created in April 1974. Until 1996 West Glamorgan had four districts; Swansea, Lliw Valley, Neath and Port Talbot. Popular Places to Live in West Glamorgan
The second largest city in Wales is Swansea, which is home to fantastic shopping facilities and a university which was founded in 1920. A proportion of the population is made up of students which means there are endless rental opportunities on offer. However, families looking to buy can secure large properties for upwards of £200,000 and there are some ‘excellent’ educational facilities according to Estyn.
Just 10 miles away from Swansea is Port Talbot, sitting on the Welsh coast. Although the area is heavily industrial the average price of a property is around £117,000 and there are plentiful schools including a huge 56 primary schools alone. Sitting just shy of the M4 and with a train station with direct links to London, Manchester, and Welsh cities, residents are spoilt with transport links.
North of Port Talbot is Neath, a traditional Welsh market town. Although the town centre is rich with shops, restaurants, and entertainment facilitates, the picturesque Victoria Gardens and Gnoll Estate Country Park offer an escape. For a real rural retreat, residents can take to the countryside surrounding Neath for walking opportunities, many with waterfalls on route.
Gorseinon has blossomed over the years and is now a popular family town with close proximity to Swansea. Along with a number of welcoming nursery schools there are two standout primary schools; Tre-Uchaf Primary (‘good with excellent features’) and Pontybrenin Primary (‘good’). Penyrheol Comprehensive is the only secondary school in the area and is ranked ‘good’ by Estyn.
The Best West Glamorgan Beaches
Although enveloped by Port Talbot on one side and Swansea Docks on the other, Jersey Marine beach is a wonderful expanse of sandy coast which is very popular in the summer. Many visit into late autumn and winter, taking a seat on the dunes to enjoy picnics or walk the dog.
Langland Bay had a wonderful sandy beach and is a popular coastal retreat for families and surfers. Many also enjoy the cliff-top walks to Caswell Bay and Rotherslade or Bracelet Bay. Caswell Bay is also very popular with surfers and is close to the picturesque village of Mumbles.
For a slice of heaven, head to Brandy Cove. The secluded spot is tucked away just west of Caswell Bat and is often quiet as it can only be accessed by a steep path. If you want peace and quiet, Brandy Cove is ideal.
Lastly, is the visually impressive Three Cliffs Bay. It is one of the Gower’s most photographed locations as the wide bay of golden sand is backed by gently sloping dunes and the impressive cliffs. Three Cliffs has been acknowledged as Britain’s best beach and Britain’s best view.
