Moving to Ipswich

When moving to Ipswich, many expect a small provincial town. However, with a plethora of new developments, a waterfront entertainment complex, and a campus for Suffolk University, this is far from the truth. Despite a blossoming contemporary edge, Ipswich is one of the oldest towns in the country and is rich with fascinating history. Historical re-enactments take place regularly so, if you are in to your history, you won’t be short of things to do. But, if arts and culture are more your thing, you are in the right place too.

The eye is instantly drawn to the many 1960’s tower blocks in Ipswich, which some argue are an eyesore. However, the town boasts a superb array of houses, from handsome Victorian villas to half-timbered Medieval cottages. Located in Suffolk, and benefiting from untouched countryside and a beautiful coast, it is the properties in these locations that are sought after.

Popular locations in Ipswich include Rushmere Road, for its great village atmosphere, whereas Christchurch Park has a more urban vibe. Belstead Toad and Bucklesham Road are home to leafy avenues full of spacious post-war homes.

Schools in Ipswich

There are a number of primary schools in Ipswich and the vast majority are championed by parents and children alike. Tattingstone CofE, Hindlesham and Chattisham CofE, St Mary’s Catholic, and St Mark’s Catholic are all top ranking schools in Ipswich.

In terms of secondary schools, Kesgrave High School, Copleston High School, and Northgate High School are all very popular, but parents should be aware that they are often oversubscribed.

Ipswich Transport Links

Travelling to and from Ipswich is easy and the town is located on the intersections of the A12 (London to Great Yarmouth) and A14 (Felixstowe to Birmingham). However, driving in Ipswich centre can be tricky as there is a confusing one-way system which is often heavily congested with traffic. Parking is expensive, so many make use of the three Park and Ride sites on the edge of the large town, which charge £2.80 for the day, and free bus travel to and from the centre.

Ipswich railway station is located one mile from the town centre. For those needing access to the capital, there are trains every half hour to London Liverpool Street (1 hour 10 minutes). Norwich is a 30 to 40-minute journey, depending on the service, and there is one train to Cambridge every hour (1 hour 20 minutes). There are also services to Peterborough, Lowestoft, and Felixstowe.

There is a secondary station in Ipswich called Derby Road. This station is unmanned and provides hourly services between Ipswich and Felixstowe. Many steer clear of this station at night as it is often quiet and lighting is poor.

Old Cattle Market bus station on Falcon Street serves all regional and long-distance bus services to and from Ipswich. There are frequent buses to Sudbury, Colchester, Stowmarket, Woodbridge, Framlington, and Felixstowe. There are also three National Express services to London per day, as well as one to Liverpool, and two per hour to London Stanstead Airport. There are also a number of buses serving the rural areas, although these are not as a frequent as the regional services.
