Living in Denmark
Denmark has been voted repeatedly in recent years as the happiest country in the world, making it an attractive destination for expats. Denmark has a strong welfare state, is one of the most egalitarian societies in the world, and offers a lot for those looking for culture, amazing sceneries and a friendly and open atmosphere.
Denmark is located in Northern Europe, southwest of Sweden, south of Norway, north of Germany and is the smallest of the Scandinavian countries. The country consists of a large peninsula, Jutland, and many smaller islands, often referred to as the Danish Archipelago. It is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy and has been a member of the EU for almost four decades. Having a strong mixed capitalist economy with an extensive welfare state, Denmark is one of the most economically stable countries in Europe. The country can not only boast a high level of income equality and excellent public health care and education but is also said to have the best business climate in the world.
Denmark is a perfect country to move to whether you want to live in the modern, innovative, and friendly capital, or want to enjoy the vast and beautiful landscapes. While you will need to learn Danish if you are planning to settle down permanently and integrate, Denmark offers a wide range of opportunities and is a progressive, and open country.
Denmark Visas
If you plan to work and settle down in Denmark, you will need a residence permit or a registration certificate after the first 3 or 6 months. There are a range of options for working visas, including the Pay Limit scheme. This is will be applicable if you have been offered a job in Denmark with an annual salary that exceeds the set threshold (currently around DKK 487,000, or £55,000).
There is also the Positive List, which is for those who will be filling skills shortages in Denmark. You will need to have a job offer included on one of the lists of professions that are currently experiencing a shortage of skilled or qualified workers. The lists are updated every six months but often include roles in healthcare, teaching, IT, and manufacturing.
There is also the Fast Track Scheme which is available for those who have been offered employment for a certified company in Denmark. This scheme will allow your employer to handle the application on your behalf and typically allows you to access a work visa faster than other routes.
Once in Denmark, you’ll need to register with the Danish Civil Registration System. This will allocate you a social security number which you’ll need to access healthcare, open a bank account, and other services.
Working in Denmark
The unemployment rate in Denmark is one of the lowest out of all the EU countries, and there is a wide range of opportunities. Whilst many Danes speak English, you should learn Danish if you are looking for long-term work, as this will greatly improve your chances of getting a job.
There is a helpful website – Work in Denmark – which has a range of roles in a variety of industries that could be suitable for expats. There is also information about creating a Danish-style CV, settling down in Denmark, and the chance to chat directly with an expert in Danish job hunting.
Business culture in Denmark is relatively informal; formality is often seen as unfriendly or rude. There is very little hierarchy and all employees at all levels are treated equally and with respect. Denmark is known for having a healthy work-life balance, with very few people working late into the evening or over the weekends. A working week will typically be around 37 hours, with people working hard during these hours but not beyond them.
