Moving to Northamptonshire
Northamptonshire is a landlocked county in the heart of the UK, and often referred to as The Rose of the Shires. On one hand, Northamptonshire offers a quintessential rural lifestyle. There are a number of thatched period cottages in quaint villages that are accessible only via country lanes. In contrast are the cosmopolitan hubs, like Northampton, which have a vast array of modern amenities, attractions, and facilities.
Residents of Northamptonshire benefit from being able to dabble in both walks of life, and some of the most beautiful countryside in England is available on their doorstep.
The biggest town is Northampton and it dates back to the Saxon period. Sadly, you will only see modern and Georgian buildings throughout the town centre as much of the medieval architecture was lost in a great fire in 1675. However, the magnificent 19th century cathedral still stands and watches over shoppers who revel in the multitude of markets the town offers.
Wellingborough is home to the 12th century All Hallows Church but the town as a whole dates back as far as the 6th century. Residents particularly like Wellingborough for its great shopping facilities and markets.
Corby is located in the northeast of Northamptonshire. Corby Boating Lake is a popular day out for families, as swans, ducks, and other waterfowl bobs amongst the boats.
Kettering is just north of Northampton and is historically known as a famous shoe manufacturing town, with production at its peak in the 19th century.
Daventry is home to the popular Daventry Country Park, which is a popular location for bird watching and fishing. The town itself has fantastic links to the M1 motorway, and is home to numerous weekly markets.
Rushden is all about history and notable attractions include Rushden Museum and Rushden Transport Museum. Both museums paint a picture of the local history of the town, particularly in relation to vehicles. Even the local council reside in a historical building – Rushden Hall.
Days out in Northamptonshire
Northamptonshire is steeped in history and has strong links to nobility. For this reason, the county is bequeathed with a multitude of stately homes with picturesque gardens that are open to the public. A real gem is Boughton House, which is one of Britain’s grandest and best preserved stately homes. Located just outside of Kettering, the stunning house and 18th century gardens are open to the public, but a family do reside here and call it home so it is best to check for opening dates and times. Another beautiful mansion is Cottesbrooke Hall in Northampton. It is a Grade I listed property dating back to 1702 and it is steeped in history.
If you enjoy the outdoors and simply want a beautiful place to walk the dog, indulge in a picnic, or get on your bike, there are a number of award winning country parks in Northamptonshire. Hunsbury Hill Country Park is home to a stunning nature reserve teeming with wildlife. Visitors with children can let them run free in the adventure playground, playing fields, and dedicated children’s activity areas. Daventry Country Park is another hit, with both waterside and woodland walks, and nature trails weaving through the nature reserve.
