Moving to Bristol
The Bristol Blitz was the relentless bombing of Bristol during World War II and the city centre is still being redeveloped due to this now. Part of this has been focused upon Bristol’s Harbourside and it is now an incredibly popular residential area offering beautiful townhouses, luxury apartments, and waterfront homes.
The post-war rush after the city was practically levelled due to German bombing saw Bristol crammed with practical, affordable concrete buildings. Aesthetics were understandably not at the top of the list but, to this day, Bristol is undergoing extensive redevelopment to bring it back to its former glory.
Another popular place to live in Bristol is the village of Clifton. It is located in the north-west of the city and is within walking distance of Bristol university and a variety of shops and restaurants. It is favoured by both students and families and the two live harmoniously in the variety of homes that can be found in the area. Clifton is just two miles from the city centre and a quick walk to The Downs.
Redland is a Bristol hotspot due to its fantastic schools, green spaces, dedicated station and large Victorian houses. It is located on a hill with the city centre below and the Downs above. Neighbouring Redland is Cotham and properties here are sought after for the same reasons and potential buyers will need a substantial budget to live in these areas.
If you have your heart set on a period property head to Stoke Bishop and Sneyd Park. Located on the north side of Durdham Down, the areas are smart suburbs and are somewhat exclusive. Many of the houses in the areas are one-offs, from Victorian and Edwardian homes to Arts and Crafts and high-end 30’s homes.
Many Londoner’s who move to Bristol end up living in Montpelier, encapsulated by its bohemian, multicultural, and urban vibe. There are some incredible Georgian and Grade II listed buildings and property prices are cheaper than the likes of sought-after Clifton.
Transport Links Bristol
Despite road improvements along the M32 (the main spur bringing traffic into Bristol city centre) travelling around the city by car is still stressful and not helped by the frustrating one-way system. However, many utilise the Park & Ride schemes set up in Portway, Bath Road, and Long Ashton.
Marlborough Street bus station is home to many local and regional buses. Bristol also has the Night Flyer – a bus running all-night services along eight routes every Friday and Saturday.
Bristol has two main train stations; Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Parkway. Both stations serve similar destinations but Parkway tends to serve more suburban routes and is located three miles from the city centre but easily accessed from a bus at Marlborough Street bus station.
Alternatively, Bristol is one of the best cycling cities in the UK, with dedicated routes through the city and outskirts.
