About Dartmouth

Dartmouth is a jewel in the South Hams area and as you enjoy an ice-cream in the sun seated next to the Dart estuary, you’d be hard pushed to find a better way to spend an afternoon. The historic harbour town is sheltered by the surrounding hills which are dotted with beautiful detached homes which turn into pastel coloured terraces on descent. The town centre is a mix of medieval, Stuart, and Tudor buildings which are home to French patisseries, independent retailers, art galleries, and fabulous restaurants.

Schools in Dartmouth

Dartmouth Academy is the largest school in the area as it caters to ages three to 19. The all-through school did not fare well in its latest Ofsted inspection, being ranked ‘inadequate’ and working hard to improve.

However, the excellent primary facilities in Dartmouth are certain to put a smile on parents faces. St John the Baptist has recently been granted academy status, Kingswear Primary is ‘good’, and Stoke Flemming Community Primary School is ‘outstanding’.

Beaches in Dartmouth

Under the watch of Dartmouth Castle are two secluded covers; Castle Cove and Sugary Cove. At high water, these quaint beaches don’t exist, but when the tides are low you have your own special private beach. Facilities nearby to both include toilets, picnic facilities, and Dartmouth Castle Tea Rooms.

Just four miles from Dartmouth town centre is Blackpool Sands – a sheltered bay set in an area of outstanding natural beauty. It has a beach shop and café, lifeguard patrol, and an award for water quality. It is a perfect stretch of coast for families, water sports lovers, and holidaymakers.

Transport Links Dartmouth

Unless you live within walking distance of the town, it can be best to rely on one of the local bus services or Park & Ride scheme that is in operation. Parking in the town is limited and it can, at times, become congested.

The nearest train station is Kingswear, which can be accessed via a ferry from Dartmouth North Embankment Terminal. However, this station is for the Dartmouth Steam Railway only. The nearest National Rail station is Totnes (30 minutes’ drive away) which provides services to London Paddington, Plymouth, Penzance, Bristol, Birmingham, and Manchester.

There are two ferry crossings in Dartmouth that take passengers across the estuary. The Higher Ferry forms part of the A379 between Torbay and Plymouth. The ferry runs between 6:30am and 11pm and costs 60 pence for foot passengers and £5.60 for a car or £9.50 for a return ticket.

The Lower Ferry connects to the B3205 and operates between 7.00am and 10.45pm. Foot passengers pay £1.50, whereas cars pay £5 for a single or £8.50 for a return.
