Schools in Sherborne
Sherborne is renowned for its historic independent schools, many of which are internationally known. Sherborne School was founded in 1550 and offers an all-round education for boys aged 13 to 18 years old. Sherborne Girls School is open to those aged 11 to 18 and is mainly a boarding school. Leweston School is another girls only independent school which follows Catholic principles for pupils aged 11 to 18. Lastly, is Leweston Preparatory School, a co-educational facility for children aged 7 to 11 years old.
However, there are also some exceptional state schools in Sherborne. The majority of primary schools are CofE, aside from Sherborne Primary, which is ‘good’ in the eyes of Ofsted. All Saints CofE, Sherborne Abbey CofE, and St Andrew’s CofE are all ‘good’ whereas Thornford CofE is ‘outstanding’.
The Gryphon School is the only local state secondary and also has a sixth form. It was awarded ‘good’ during its latest Ofsted inspection.
Shopping in Sherborne
Residents of Sherborne can choose from Waitrose, The Co-Op and Sainsbury’s when it comes to doing their weekly shop. The town centre also has a variety of mostly independent retailers, from home furnishings and fashion, to butchers and greengrocers.
Just off Cheap Street (the main shopping street) are a number of auction houses and antiques dealers. There is also an open air market that takes over Cheap Street on Thursdays and Saturdays, as well as a Farmers Market every third Friday.
Transport Links Sherborne
The A303 is about 8 miles north of Sherborne and is the main east-west trunk road serving the area and spans from Penzance in Cornwall before it merges to the M3 in the east, near Basingstoke. Yeovil is 6 miles away, Bath is 40 miles away, Poole (on the Dorset coast) is 35 miles away, Weymouth is 37 miles, and Salisbury is 44 miles.
As well as a number of local and regional buses, Sherborne also has a main line station on the London Waterloo, via Salisbury, to Exeter St Davids line. Trains to Waterloo take around 2 hours 20 minutes and services to Exeter take just over one hour.
