Tucked on the western edge of the wonderful North Wessex Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the quaint town of Calne and the local vicinity is steeped in history, culture and places of interest.

Calne sits on the river Marden; a small river flowing through the town from the hills that shape the surrounding countryside, joining the River Avon just upstream of Chippenham.

Local history dates back to ancient times, with evidence of prehistoric settlement in the form of a Bronze Age burial to the north-west of the parish church. The landscape has been built upon and prospered under The Romans, Normans and Anglo-Saxons over time. There was a Roman settlement called Verlucio at Sandy Lane and three Roman villas have been discovered between this settlement and Calne, one being located near Bowood and another close to Studley Bridge.

This historically industrious town is famous for being the birthplace of the old English traditional technique of curing ham and bacon, known as the Wiltshire Cure. This time-honoured method of curing was introduced by the Harris family of Calne in 1843, who cured bacon in the town for over 200 years.

Calne and the surrounding area has a rich and interesting industrial heritage focussing over time on droving; canal and rail travel; and meat, woollen and broadcloth production.
