About Fife
Fife is an area in eastern Scotland on a peninsula on the North Sea. It’s known as the Kingdom of Fife due to its past as one of the major Pictish Kingdoms. As such, the area is rich in history, with castles, palaces, cathedrals and abbeys.
The area has plenty of opportunities to take in spectacular natural landscapes, from stretches of sandy coastline to miles of pine forests and woodlands, as well as learn about the varied Scottish wildlife. Fife is also known as ‘the home of golf’ due to its history with the sport and the number of courses in the area – there are 50 golf courses in total.

Fife is home to a number of charming towns, the largest being St Andrews, Glenrothes, and Dunfermline. There are also smaller quaint villages across the area, such as Aberdour and Culross, and seaside towns such as Crail, Anstruther and Pittenweem that are full of character.

Schools in Fife
There are many good-quality schools across Fife. Dunnikier Primary School in Kirkcaldy is the oldest and most recommended primary school in the area. It has been running for over 125 years and the school was deemed ‘very good’ in all of Education Scotland’s quality indicators. Pitteuchar East Primary School and Collydean Primary School, both in Glenthroes, are also highly recommended.
There are also many good secondary schools in Fife. Madras College in St Andrew’s, Waid Academy in Anstruther, and Inverkeithing High School in Inverkeithing have all performed well in exam league tables in recent years.
Transport Links in Fife
There are 19 train stations across Fife, including Dunfermline Town, Glenthroes, and Kirkcaldy. Leuchars station also serves St Andrews, which does not have its own station. Journeys from Dunfermline to Edinburgh take around 30 minutes and to Glasgow take around an hour and a half. Trains from Leuchars to Edinburgh take around an hour and to Glasgow take around two hours.
Fife is mainly connected by A roads, but with the M90 linking Dunfermline to Perth and Forth Road Bridge. Driving to Edinburgh from Dunfermline takes around 40 minutes and driving to Dundee and to Glasgow both take an hour. From St Andrews, driving to Edinburgh takes an hour and 30 minutes, to Dundee takes around 30 minutes, and to Glasgow takes nearly two hours.
The nearest airport is in Edinburgh. Journeys to Edinburgh airport from Dunfermline take 30 minutes, 40 minutes from Kirkcaldy, and an hour from St Andrews.
