Living in Lyndhurst
Lyndhurst is a very special village right in the heart of the breath-taking New Forest. It has a population of around 3000 people, and has been known as the ‘Capital of the New Forest’ since it became a royal hunting ground in 1079.
Lyndhurst is home to both the district council and the regional headquarters of the Forestry Commission, which is located in an historic building still owned by the Crown.
There is a relaxed feel to life in Lyndhurst, with a very different pace of life to that in surrounding areas. People move to Lyndhurst to escape the stress of ‘normal’ life, and to be able to enjoy more of their chosen leisure activities and hobbies.
The New Forest – which is an important site for nature conservation – is a popular area for tourism, especially in the summer months and during the weekends. People gravitate to Lyndhurst’s good range of independent shops and eateries, and the New Forest Heritage Centre is also a key attraction.
Things to Do in Lyndhurst
The New Forest Golf Club is located just off Southampton Road, and is ranked by Today’s Golfer magazine as one of the top 50 heathland courses in the UK. It welcomes new club members and guests alike to take on its picturesque course and then dine in the clubhouse afterwards.
Owing to its central location in the New Forest, Lyndhurst is also a hub for cyclists stopping for a break or to refuel. If you don’t own your own bicycle, then The Woods Cyclery or AA Bike Hire both offer bike rental.
Walking is also popular here, and a short wander up to Bolton’s Bench will give you a great chance of spotting some of the most famous local residents, the New Forest ponies. Alternatively, you could try the 8.5-mile circular Lyndhurst Parish Walk if you have more time and energy.
The village has a thriving cultural life as well, with the New Forest Heritage Centre holding year-round exhibitions of art and photography as well as regular local craft fairs.
If you want to explore further afield, the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, Exbury Gardens and Steam Railway, Paultons Park, and the picturesque port of Lymington are all within easy reach, as are the bustling coastal cities of Southampton and Bournemouth.
Food and Drink
Lyndhurst is packed with cafes, pubs and local restaurants serving fresh produce. From tea rooms to fine dining restaurants, you are never far from a good meal here, and you can easily spot locally produced food and drink by looking for the New Forest Marque.
There are two lovely country pubs – The New Forest Inn and The Waterloo Arms – just outside of the village centre, and in the warmer months, the local ice cream parlour is not to be missed!
Community spirit in Lyndhurst
If you are lucky enough to be moving to Lyndhurst, then you are likely to be welcomed into a close-knit and kind neighbourhood. Events ranging from football matches to fireworks are organised throughout the year, and these are very effective in bringing the people of the town together and building a strong sense of community.
Travel Links
The roads around Lyndhurst offer beautiful forest scenery, but the village’s location on the main scenic route between Bournemouth and Southampton means that traffic can be quite heavy in the summer. Lyndhurst is just 9 miles away from Southampton and 19 miles from Bournemouth, and the M27 motorway is a short 15 minute drive away.
Lyndhurst village does not have its own train station, but Ashurst is just a 5 minute drive away, and you can also reach Brockenhurst train station in only 10 minutes.
More Buses and Blue Star operate regular bus services connecting Lyndhurst to all the main villages and towns in the area.
