Living in Alton Staffordshire
Alton is probably most famous for being the location of the popular theme park Alton Towers. This is located around two miles from the village and grew up around a gothic mansion partly designed by noted architect Augustus Pugin and previously owned by the Earls of Shrewsbury. It is now one of the most-visited theme parks in Europe, and local residents benefit from the free tickets they receive as well as plenty of passing trade for their shops, pubs and B&Bs that otherwise may not be sustainable in such a small community.
Alton Manor is only one of several historic buildings in Alton. The quaint Round House, also known as Alton Lock Up, is a tiny 200-year-old circular prison cell that stands in the centre of the village. The gothic-revival Alton Castle is also a notable feature, standing proudly on a hill overlooking the valley on the site of the original Norman castle.
There is a wide range of property types available in Alton, which tend to sell quickly. There is a strong sense of community in the village, with a number of pubs and restaurants serving the visitors and locals alike.
Things to do in Alton
As well as the theme park, there is plenty to do around Alton. The village is located on the east banks of the river Churnet, with Dimmingsdale right on the doorstep. This wildlife haven and Site of Special Scientific Interest is a tranquil and beautiful spot for walks all year round. Indeed, the section of the Churnet Valley around Alton is sometimes referred to as ‘Staffordshire’s Little Switzerland’ due to its steep gorges and lush woodlands surrounding this stretch of the river, so this is a great place to live if you enjoy outdoor pursuits. The Peak District National Park is just to the north of Alton as well, with beautiful towns like Bakewell and Matlock easily accessible from the village.
If history and folklore interest you, then a visit to the Chained Oak is a must. This is exactly what it sounds like – an ancient oak tree just outside Alton village, covered with chains! The accompanying legend claims that in the 1830s, a poor woman asked the Earl of Shrewsbury for some money, but when he refused, she cursed him. For each branch that fell off the tree, a member of his family would die. The Earl clearly believed in the curse, because he had the tree chained up to prevent any branches falling.
Schooling in Alton
Despite being a tiny village, Alton has its own nursery and primary school, which is St. Peter’s CE Academy. For children of all ages the prestigious boarding and day school Denstone College is just a 5-minute drive away. There are two other high schools within a 10–15-minute drive – The Cheadle Academy in Cheadle and Thomas Alleyne’s High School in Uttoxeter, both of which are rated good by OFSTED. There is also a wide range of schools and colleges in nearby Stoke on Trent, so plenty of choice for families moving into this area.
Travel in Alton
The village of Alton is located roughly halfway between Stoke on Trent and Derby, both of which can be accessed in roughly 30-40 minutes. Alton’s train station was closed some time ago, so the closest railway stations are now Uttoxeter and Stoke on Trent. Alton is positioned between the M6 and M1 motorways, so travelling north and south is relatively easy by car. Traffic can be heavy in the village, especially at the beginning and end of the day due to the theme park, but it’s still less of a problem than in large towns and cities.
