Living in Leek
Leek is a pretty market town on the River Churnet, located northeast of Stoke-on-Trent. Sometimes referred to as the ‘Queen of the Staffordshire Moorlands’, it was granted its royal charter in 1214 and has a long and fascinating history including several connections to the Arts and Crafts movement.
Weekly markets are offered in both the Market Place and the restored indoor Victorian Butter Market, so there is a variety of high-quality produce on offer. Local specialities include condiments, confectionary and the traditional Staffordshire oatcake, but the markets and independent shops are also great for furniture, antiques and gifts.
In May every year, the town hosts the Leek Arts Festival to celebrate its cultural heritage. The event has expanded over the years, and this festival is now a popular tourist attraction with visitors from near and far.
Being on the A53, a short drive north will take you into the Peak District National Park which offers a whole host of activities, nature, and beautiful views to enjoy. Alternatively a short drive south will take you in to Stoke-on-Trent which offers more local history and an array of pottery shops to explore.
If you want to explore other local cities, you are spoilt for choice with Birmingham, Nottingham, Manchester and Sheffield all within a 90minute drive.
