Moving to Derby

Derby is known as the home of bone china, silk and Rolls-Royce engines, and is located on the edge of the Peak District National park. Whilst the beauty of the city does not match that of the products it is famed for, redevelopment has blossomed the city into a popular place to live and work.

The city of Derby has undergone major redevelopments which has made it an ideal place to live and work. The stunning location means that Derby residents can easily escape the hustle and bustle of the central city and enjoy time in the countryside, whilst benefitting from East Midlands culture.

There are over 90,000 homes in Derby and those moving to the area will be surprised at the variety of properties available to buy and rent. Potential residents will also be pleased to hear that the local Council is rated one of the best in England and Wales, awarded the highest possible status by the Audit Commission.

Those who move to Derby are captivated by the period properties, many of which are Grade II listed or Victorian. A lot of the old mills have been converted into trendy apartments, benefitting from high ceilings.

The majority of homes in the city centre itself are flats and apartments which are favoured by young professionals and students who like the easy access to the University of Derby.

The popular family areas include Allestree, Mackworth village, Quarndon and Darley Abbey. The area of Mickleover is also ideal for families and older couples as the majority of residential properties are semi-detached or detached homes.

Derby benefits from having over 100 schools, many of them are rated outstanding, making it an attractive choice for families.

Shopping in Derby

Derby has a very prominent café culture and the Cathedral Quarter is brimming with places to enjoy a spot of lunch or afternoon tea. The streets of this area are also full of independent shops and boutiques. A similar shopping experience can be had in St Peter’s Quarter, a busy and diverse area. However, the large Derbion shopping centre is not far away, which offers all the high-street favourites, a multiplex cinema and countless restaurants.

Derby Transport Links

Driving in Derby city centre will require you to have the patience of a saint at pretty much any time of the day. The traffic is slow moving and carparks rarely have spaces. The best way to get into the city is by Park & Ride, with a scheme operating from the Meteor Centre.

The M1 lies to the east of Derby, with junction 25 easily accessible by the A52. This allows those who drive to get to the likes of Sheffield, Nottingham, Loughborough and Leicester easily. Alternatively, the M6 is further to the west, connecting Derby to Birmingham, Stoke-on-Trent and Manchester.

Derby railway station is formed on six platforms and is served by East Midlands Trains and CrossCountry. It underwent major renovations from 2005 to 2009 and services now travel to Birmingham New Street, Sheffield, Chesterfield, Nottingham and Leicester.
