Moving to Dumbarton, located between Glasgow and the Highlands, and situated on the banks of the River Clyde, property prices have seen an increase in recent years, and on average prices are £155K, which is currently below the national average.

Attractions in Dumbarton

Looking out across the River Clyde, you can see Dumbarton Castle sitting majestically on a plug of volcanic basalt knows as Dumbarton Rock. Dumbarton Castle, was the centre of the ancient Kingdom of Strathclyde, supposedly visited by Merlin. It was later sacked by Vikings. It became a cornerstone of medieval royal power and latterly served as a military base and prison. You can explore its many fortifications with the Dumbarton Castle interactive family trail.

Another one for history buffs, Dumbarton is home to the Scottish Maritime Museum. There is also another site in Irvine, with both holding an important and nationally recognised collection of maritime history, encompassing a variety of historic ships, artefacts, shipbuilding machinery, machine tools, and fascinating personal items.

You will find the popular Overtoun Estate to the west of Dumbarton. The beautiful mansion house dates back to 1859, and is set in a variety of landscapes. The grounds are comprised of wooded glens, exotic gardens, and gorges rolling into parkland. The estate can be enjoyed by all, and provides spectacular views of the surrounding Kilpatrick Hills

Other popular attractions include Gailston Garden. The garden was developed 200 years ago, and is a great Sunday after location for families. There is a playground, café, and many areas to sprawl for a picnic, for those who like the outdoors.

Dumbarton Transport Links

Dumbarton has two train stations, Dumbarton East and Dumbarton Central. Trains run directly from both stations to Glasgow Queen street, with journey times taking just under or over half an hour depending on the service. There is one direct service to Edinburgh from each station per hour, with a journey time of 1 hour 32 mins approximately.

A commute via car to Glasgow only takes 30 minutes in good traffic. However, even outside of rush hour times, the traffic is often less than desirable and public transport is a better option. As well as the train services, there are also a number of bus services running across Dumbarton and Greater Glasgow.
