About Trowbridge
Trowbridge, the Magna Carta Baron County town of Wiltshire, settled on the River Biss, is steeped in history and abundant with industrial heritage. Trowbridge flourished as a hub for the manufacturing of woollen cloth from the 14th century and was known largely for the production of superior quality clothing and blankets. The Kennet and Avon canal to the north of Trowbridge enabled coal to be transported to the woollen mills in the town, which in the 17th century facilitated the onset of steam-powered manufacturing in the woollen cloth mills.
Many of the historic buildings belonging to the Trowbridge textile industry still stand in the town, as well as other buildings of architectural interest. The Newtown conservation area, a protected area consisting mainly of Victorian houses, ensures this period in our rich tapestry of history is preserved. An architectural Aladdin’s cave, Trowbridge has six Grade I listed buildings; Lovemead House; St James’ Church; and numbers 46, 64, 68 and 70, Fore Street.
