Is Alnwick a nice place to live?

Alnwick is a market town in Northumberland, located on the south bank of the river Aln. Alnwick has a rich history dating back to 600 AD, when it was a thriving agricultural town. Today, it is a popular tourist and industrial town, with plenty to offer residents.

Alnwick Castle is one of Britain’s most iconic castles and has featured in films such as Harry Potter franchise and TV shows such as Downton Abbey. Dating back to the Norman period, it has been the seat of the Percy family since 1309. Continuing Alnwick’s connection to culture and media, Barter Books, one of the largest second-hand book shops in England can be found in the town’s old railway station. The town also hosts a number of festivals and events throughout the year, including a Book festival and an international music festival.

Alnwick is also celebrated for its stunning local landscapes. There are plenty of opportunities to get outside and enjoy nature, as well as hike, ramble and cycle around the local countryside, including Summerseats Viewpoint and the nearby ruins of Hulne Priory.

Alnwick has decent transport links, lying adjacent to the A1 with easy access to Newcastle and Edinburgh. Driving from Alnwick to Newcastle takes around 45 minutes and to Edinburgh takes two hours. The nearest train station is in Alnmouth, a ten-minute drive from the centre of Alnwick, or 15 minutes by bus. Trains from Alnmouth to Newcastle take 30 minutes, to Edinburgh takes an hour, and to Leeds takes two hours.
