Moving to Dundee

Dundee is Scotland’s most overlooked cities, but why? It has all the culture, shopping, and experiences that are associated with the bigger cities. Dundee merges all of these draws, adds its own flair, which results in a Scottish city with a unique character of its own.

Dundee is located on the most beautiful river in Scotland, the Tay. What was once a former industrial whaling port has undergone major regeneration and now encompasses the cultural, artistic, and modern elements people look for in a city.

Dundee is a densely-populated city, and there are certain areas which different demographics flock to. Dundee’s trendy West End is where the majority of the student population reside and is full of rental properties, bars, cages, delis, and boutiques.

The further west you head, the tenement flats give way to large Edwardian houses. The area of Menzieshill and the Ninewells hospital is also located in this area and the majority of medical staff tend to reside in the beautiful houses located here.

The city centre of Dundee is home to wide Victorian streets and countless 19th century properties. The waterfront recently endured a £270 million regeneration project, installing new retail and residential properties. Due to this, the city is very much an up and coming place to live.

North of the centre of Dundee is the sought after residential location of Baxter’s Park, which gives way to the lovely suburbs of Ardler, Fintry, and Charleston.

Attractions in Dundee

There are a number of things to see and do when living in Dundee. The McManus is not only one of the most beautiful structures in the city, but is a gallery and museum showcasing art and natural history.

If you want to uncover some of Dundee’s history, head to the Verdant Works. This restored mill houses interactive displays which tell the story of 19th and 20th century jute production in the city. Frigate Unicorn (a 46-gun sailing frigate), The Howff (an ancient cemetery), and Broughty Castle are some of Dundee’s most popular historical attractions.

One for all the family is Camperdown Wildlife Park. It sits in the grounds of the 19th-century mansion, Camperdown House, and families can enjoy such critters as lemurs, brown bears, monkeys, and wallabies.

Dundee Transport Links

The A90 runs straight through Dundee, and the A92 takes residents over the Tay Road Bridge and as far south as Dunfermline. However, it is worth remembering that this bridge has a toll if travelling southbound. The centre suffers with less levels of traffic than other cities due to a car-sharing programme that was implemented in the 1990s and Dundee is often recognised as the UK’s most car-friendly city.

The city has two major railway stations; Dundee Station and Brought Ferry Station which is to the east end of the city centre. Dundee’s train network is also supplemented by three smaller stations – Invergowrie, Balmossie, Monifieth.
