About Bridgenorth
20 miles southeast of Shrewsbury, along the Severn Valley, is Bridgnorth. The town is split into the High Town and the Low Town. Traditionally, the High Town is the residential area of Bridgnorth, with the Low Town acting as a busy port. A novelty to the town is Bridgnorth Cliff Railway. The funicular railway is the oldest and steepest inland electric cliff railway in the UK and connects the Low and High towns.
Moving to Bridgnorth
The High Town of Bridgnorth is full of 16th and 17th century properties and many head to the west to buy; just on and off the Ludlow Road is the most popular. Similarly, the houses located on the banks of the River Severn are very sought after but, before taking the plunge, ask your estate agent about flooding in this area. Although the winding lanes of both the High and Low towns can be tricky to navigate at first, the town houses and historic cottages in the conservation area are second to none.
If you are a first-time buyer in Bridgnorth, look to have a budget of £70,000 for flat or £130,000 for a small terraced property or cottage. There are three primary schools in Bridgnorth; Castlefields, St Leonard’s CofE, and St Joh’s Catholic. St John’s is ‘outstanding’ in the eyes of Ofsted, but also heavily oversubscribed. Both Castlefields and St Leonard’s were ranked ‘good’ in their latest Ofsted inspections.
Secondary schools aren’t particularly strong in Bridgnorth. Bridgnorth Endowed School is ‘satisfactory’ but with ‘many good elements’. Oldbury Wells is ‘good and improving’.
Transport Links Bridgnorth
Sitting on the intersection of many A roads means Bridgnorth is well connected for those with cars. Birmingham is under an hour’s drive away in good traffic. Telford is just 20 minutes away, Wolverhampton 30 minutes, and Kidderminster 25 minutes.
Bridgnorth does not have a train station – only the Severn Valley Railway which is a tourist attraction for steam train enthusiasts. The nearest station with ample services is Telford Central, 20 minutes’ drive away. Services from Telford Central run to Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Shrewsbury, London, and Chester.
