Living in Portugal

While not as popular with tourists as Spain or France, Portugal is a very attractive expat destination. The Mediterranean country’s long sandy beaches, mountainous northern regions, stunning valleys and the long, sunny summers combined with Portugal’s beautiful architecture, and rich culture will provide a high quality of life and many exciting adventures for those looking for a more relaxed and alternative lifestyle. And if you are looking for city-life, Lisbon would be a great place to move, as it is not only one of the economic centres of the continent but has a rich and diverse cultural life.

Portugal is located in southwestern Europe and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and Spain. Some smaller islands in the Atlantic and Madeira are also part of Portugal. Portugal is a developed country with a strong economy, has a high quality of life and ranks as one of the most peaceful countries in the world. Portugal is a culturally diverse country, with some areas still retaining more traditional lifestyles and other more metropolitan areas like Faro or Lisbon. Portugal also has a good public education system and universal health care.

While Portugal might not be as strong economically as France or Germany, it is an amazing tourist and expat destination, with a diverse and rich history and a culture that welcomes foreigners. Living costs are lower than in many Western European countries, and there are thousands of stunning locations to visit, so if you are looking for a slightly different lifestyle, you will enjoy living in Portugal.

Finding a Job in Portugal

Expats looking for a job in Portugal will find there is strong competition from Portuguese citizens and other immigrants. However, there are still some skill shortages in certain areas, so if you’re able to fill these gaps, you could find it easy to secure the right role.

The biggest industries in Portugal include tourism, textiles, hospitality, construction and electronics. Many large multinational companies have a presence in Portugal, with local headquarters stationed across the big cities.

According to Numbeo, the average salary in Portugal is €1,098 after tax, which is much less than the average UK monthly salary of €2,850. However, as Portugal has a generally lower cost of living (below), expats can find that they are able to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle.

Education in Portugal

Public schools in Portugal are free for Portuguese citizens and also for foreign nationals. Basic education, known as Ensino Básico in Portuguese, is compulsory and includes children aged six to 15. After this comes Secondary Education, Ensino Secundário, where children will need to choose the field they want to study in higher education, i.e., sciences, humanities, or arts.

The curriculum in public schools will be taught in Portuguese, so expat parents will need to consider which type of schooling will be best for their children. Assimilating can be tricky, but going to a state school could make it easier for expat children to pick up the language. It’s also worth bearing in mind that in the past, the state education system faced criticism due to issues with the Ministry of Education. However, the government is now taking steps to address these issues and reduce the need for teachers’ strikes.

Another option would be to attend one of the many international schools in Portugal, which are mainly found around the Algarve or Lisbon. Lessons at the right international school will be taught in the language your child already speaks and could either be in your local curriculum or an international qualification, such as the International Baccalaureate.
