City of the Month – Melbourne

We have chosen Australia’s second largest city, Melbourne for our city of the month feature in January. Melbourne is an extremely popular city among expats from all over the world, and is one of Australia’s multicultural centres. Britons moving to Melbourne will discover a city that uniquely combines European culture and style with an easy-going Australian attitude.

Multicultural Melbourne

Melbourne is one of Australia’s most multicultural and cosmopolitan cities, where over one-third of the residents were born overseas, and where there are over 140 nations represented. Some of the largest expat groups are the British, Italians, Vietnamese, Chinese and Greek. You can also find some distinct cultural districts in Melbourne, such as the Greek Quarter, Chinatown or Vietnamese and Italian communities. Melbourne’s multiculturalism means that Britons moving to the city will not only have the chance to meet many compatriots, but will find a tolerant, welcoming and open atmosphere in the city. The combination of influences from so many different nations also means that Melbourne can boast an extremely rich and diverse cultural landscape, including great art, music, festivals, fashion and food.

Quality of Life in Melbourne

Melbourne is often regarded as one of the most liveable cities in the world, and was ranked first on the Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2011 list. Melbourne’s economy is strong and highly diversified, with relatively low unemployment rates and these ensure that there are a variety of opportunities for expats moving there. Goods and services are widely available, and the cost of living is relatively low compared to other large Australian cities. The city has an extensive train and tram network, an abundance of green spaces and parks for those who like relaxing in nature, low crime rates and a pleasant climate all year round.

Melbourne’s Economy

Being the capital of Australia’s largest state, Victoria, and with over 70% of the state’s population living in Melbourne, the city is an important cultural, economic and business centre. Melbourne’s economic strengths lie mainly in its finance, manufacturing, technology transportation, tourism and IT sectors. The city is also home to the headquarters of some of Australia’s major corporations, its busiest seaport and one of the continent’s largest airports. These factors, coupled with low unemployment rates and a comparatively low cost of living ensure that there is an abundance of good business and employment opportunities and the city can also offer good living standards to expats moving there.

Melbourne’s Culture

Famous for its numerous art, music and film festivals, museums and art galleries, sporting events and cosmopolitan atmosphere, Melbourne can boast a varied cultural life. With its vibrant nightlife, shopping malls and many high-end boutiques Melbourne is especially well-suited to young professionals. The city is also a foodie’s paradise with an exciting selection of foods from all over the world, and excellent wines from the wine regions surrounding the city.
