New York is certainly one of the most well-known destinations in the world and has been a popular city to emigrate to throughout the last centuries. New York is among the most ethnically, linguistically and culturally diverse cities in the world. Its inhabitants speak as many as 800 different languages, and over 35% of New York’s population wasn’t born in the USA. This diversity has its historical roots. The city was a major destination for over 10 million European immigrants at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Since then, the city has become even more diverse, with many large ethnic communities, including the Chinese, Jamaicans, Mexicans, Indians and Italians. This ethnic diversity brings cultural diversity and a certain level of tolerance that you can only find in big cities.

New York’s Economy & Employment

New York is a major global centre of business, commerce, media, advertising, finance and tourism. The New York metropolitan area is also the largest regional economy in the USA and 45 Fortune 500 companies are headquartered in the city. The city obviously presents some incredible employment and business opportunities, with a range of employers in different sectors, from small businesses to large corporations and multinational organisations. Salaries are generally higher than in other parts of the USA, due to the higher living costs, but you should also be prepared for the sometimes tough competition for good jobs, especially if you are looking for employment in your chosen field.

Nightlife and Culture

New York is often referred to as “the city that never sleeps”. The city is one of the global centres of art, film and media and has over 2000 arts and cultural organisations and over 500 galleries. If you move to New York, you’ll certainly be able to find something exciting to do 24 hours a day, whether it’s going to the museum, going out for a few cocktails, listening to some music or attending an art show at midnight.

Central Park

Central Park, located in Manhattan is a major landmark of New York and is a regular spot for nearby workers taking their lunch break, those looking for some respite from the buzz of the city, joggers and tourists. The Central Park also offers a range of activities, which include boating, ice skating, rock climbing and birdwatching. Throughout the summer, you can attend free open-air theatre productions in the park and open-air concerts given by the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera.
