City of the Month – Vancouver

If you are moving to Canada in search of a better lifestyle or new career opportunities, settling down in Vancouver could be a great choice. Whilst Vancouver is relatively small with its 600,000 inhabitants, at least compared to big metropolises, it’s a truly cosmopolitan city and is often considered to be one of the most “liveable” cities in the world. If you decide to move to Vancouver in Canada, you’ll have the chance to choose a more relaxed lifestyle, and will find a host of excellent economic and career opportunities.

Proximity to Nature

One of the first things that tourists and inhabitants alike mention about Vancouver is the city’s greenness. It’s not just about the city’s environmentally friendly and green policies. Vancouver itself is green and there are several huge parks to be found in and around the city. Vancouver is also surrounded by water on three sides, which further enhances the city’s natural scenery. This means that there are a lot of outdoor activities you can pursue in the city and can always go for a walk, run or cycle ride close to where you live or work.

Quality of Life in Vancouver

Vancouver often ranks among the top cities in the world for quality of life. Whilst the cost of living is higher than in some other Canadian and North American cities, if you live in Vancouver, you’ll experience a relaxing city environment, a good public transport system and a range of activities ranging from skiing and going to the beach to enjoying the city’s nightlife and cultural scene.

Vancouver’s Multiculturalism

Vancouver is one of the most culturally diverse cities in Canada, with over 50% of the city’s inhabitants not having English as their first language. There are a number of ethnic neighbourhoods, such as Chinatown, Little Italy and Greektown. Vancouver’s inhabitants enjoy and contribute to a great diversity when it comes to the languages spoken, the restaurants and markets and to the cultural scene. At the same time, Vancouver’s multiculturalism does not become faceless as in some other large cities around the world, probably because of the city’s smaller size and sense of community that you’ll also experience when you move to Vancouver.

Economy in Vancouver

Vancouver is one of Canada’s industrial centres and has a diversified economy with IT, forestry, biotechnology, animation, film and aerospace being some of its most important sectors. There are thus a range of professional opportunities for skilled workers. When it comes to buying or renting a house and other costs, Vancouver is among the most expensive cities in the world, but salaries will also be similarly higher.

Whether you are moving alone, or with your family, and whatever you tend to look for in a city, Vancouver has a lot of great things to offer.
