This month Madrid, the capital of Spain gets our 'how to spend a Sunday afternoon…' treatment. If you're thinking of heading to the Spanish capital anytime soon, read ahead to get our tips of where to visit and what to do.
1. Sample some fine Spanish wine
Spanish wine is famous through the world and the capital city is one of the best places to sample some of Spain's most delicious fermented grapes. Outside of the city there are hundreds of amazing vineyards, but there are plenty of specialist wine shops in the city centre as well that you can visit for tasting sessions.
2. See the city from high above
Madrid is a beautiful city where you can walk around for hours and still be constantly amazed by its architectural delights. But to really appreciate the city you need to see it from above. Fortunately, you can easily see the city from the air thanks to the famous cable car that runs across a section of the city.
The Teleferico runs between two of Madrid's famous parks the Parque del Oeste and Casa De Campo. There are 80 cable cars that hold up to five people each. The cable cars travel a total distance of around 2.5km and rise as high as 131 feet in the air. If you’re not scared of heights this is a perfect way to enjoy Madrid’s scenery and sites.
3. Visit Madrid’s famous museums and art galleries
Madrid is the envy of cultural cities across Europe due to its amazing art galleries and museums. While you’re in the city, regardless of how long for, you have to visit some of the galleries and museums, like the
Prado or the
Museo Reina Sofia to see famous pieces by Salvador Dali and Picasso.
4. Visit the Santiago Bernabeu
The Santiago Bernabeu, home to Real Madrid, is one of the most famous stadiums in the world. On match days the stadium welcomes 85,000 supporters to cheer on Real Madrid. But if you're not able to visit when a game is on you can take a tour of the stadium to see behind the scenes. You can visit the media centre and sit where Jose Mourinho and co do when they're giving press conferences to pretend you're addressing the media after a game.
5. Buy some new shoes
Madrid and the regions that surround it are full of factories that pump out thousands of shoes every day. This means that there are dozens of incredible shoe shops dotted across the city where you can buy almost any kind of shoe to suit almost every budget. If you enjoy shoe shopping you're in for a massive treat!
