Australia has always been a popular expat destination with Britons, and the country is a great choice, as it offers good living standards and a more relaxed outdoor lifestyle in a relatively similar cultural setting to the UK. There are many great cities to move to in Australia, including Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane and Sydney that all offer a slightly different cultural and lifestyle experience. This month, we’ll give you some ideas on how to spend a Sunday afternoon if you move to Sydney.
One of the great things about Sydney, is that on the one hand it’s a really vibrant cultural, arts and financial centre in Australia, and that on the other hand, it’s located on Australia’s south-east coast of the Tasman Sea, meaning that there are a large number of beaches very close to the actual city centre. A Sunday afternoon is a great time to relax and enjoy one of Sydney’s beautiful, sandy beaches. The city’s warm climate attracts people almost all year round. Bondi Beach is the one closest to the city centre and is perfect for either swimming or surfing. Other great beaches include the Whale Beach, also perfect for swimming or surfing, Narrabeen, which is perfectly suited for surfing and Avalon.
Sydney Harbour is one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the world, always dotted with hundreds of sailing boats and ferries. It is also possible to walk along the harbour’s edge, where you’ll find many parks, gardens and natural areas. The areas around the harbour are always buzzing with people, and you’ll find many great restaurants and stylish cafes around here. Going for a walk or a relaxing picnic in one of the parks surrounding the harbour or visiting one of the restaurants is a great way to spend your Sunday. If you want to explore the harbour even better, go on a ferry for a cruise around the harbour.
The Sydney Opera House is probably Australia’s most iconic building and was designed by Danish architect, Jorn Utzon in 1956. The building that has been said to resemble palm fronds, orange segments and Maya temples, provides an exciting sight from wherever you are looking at it, but many say that the best place to view it from is the ferry in Circular Quay. There are also half-hourly guided tours to see the inside of the Opera House. One of the best ways to experience the building’s acoustics and beauty is probably to buy a ticket for one of the 2400 annual events.
Sydney is a large city that has a lot of different things to offer, depending on what you’re looking for. One of the best and most relaxing ways to further explore the city is to go for a walk in one of the city’s arty suburbs, and to take a walk in one of Sydney’s numerous parks. For a walk in a park, you can visit the Royal Botanic Gardens, which incidentally also has great views of Sydney Harbour and the Opera House. Other parks to explore include Hyde Park in the centre and Centennial Park. Some of the suburbs worth exploring on foot include for example Paddington, Woolloomooloo, Darlinghurst in the centre or the more arty Newtown and Surrey Hills.
