When you first move to a new country it’s important to get a grasp of what’s going on so you know where to go and what to do. One of the best times to do this is a Sunday afternoon, why? You don’t have work, lots of people are out, and Sunday is the day of rest so it’s a great time to relax.
This week we thought we’d have a look at five things you should do on a Sunday afternoon in Berlin. (You could go to these places on any day of the week, but for the purposes of this blog post, we reckon Sunday is best).
When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989 most of the wall was demolished so that citizens could move freely between East and West Berlin. However, there are still pieces of the wall scattered across the city. You can still visit Check Point Charlie, the famous border crossing, which has now been developed into a tourist centre. You should also visit the East Side Gallery which is a part of the wall that’s been turned into an open air street art gallery.
Berlin is a very bike friendly city equipped with cycle lanes and special lights at traffic stops. In the centre there are plenty of bike hire shops where you can cheaply rent a bike for just an afternoon or a whole day. If you’re strapped for time then cycling around the city will make it much easier to make the most of your stay.
Berlin’s zoo is one of the most popular zoos in the world and one of the oldest in Europe. Come rain or shine there is something to do at the zoo. On sunny days the zoo has plenty of picnic areas where you can sit back and watch the animals. On days when the weather isn’t quite as good, the aquarium has plenty of amazing fish for you to view.
Unlike many parliaments around the world, you can go in and see the Reichstag on any day of the week. The building includes fascinating exhibits with photos and information about Germany’s political history.
The Charlottenburg Gardens, named after Queen Sophie-Charlotte of Prussia, are located in the West of Berlin. The stunning gardens feature huge fountains, beautiful plants and stunning lawns. Whether it’s a hot summer afternoon or a crisp autumn morning the Charlottenburg gardens are well worth a visit.
