How to Prepare Your Belongings for Moving

Moving house is an exciting time, but it’s not without its challenges. Properly preparing your belongings ahead of moving day is one way that you can make your move hassle-free. With our expert guidance, you can move your items efficiently and safely, ready to unpack in your new home.

Declutter

Your first step in preparing your belongings should be to declutter. You don’t want to waste time and money moving items to your new home that you’ll end up getting rid of when you’re there. So, take some time a few weeks before moving day to go through everything and clear out items that you no longer use or want.

Make sure you check every room and every cupboard, including the loft, garage, shed and cupboard under the stairs. You might find that you’ve accumulated a lot of surplus items over the years, and it will be easier to get rid of them in your own time rather than on moving day when things might be a bit hectic.

You should also consider your furniture and whether it will fit in your new home. You should already have the dimensions for each room, and you will usually have an opportunity to visit the property before moving day. Make sure to measure your current furniture to check it will be suitable for the rooms you need it in. If it’s not, sell or donate the items you can no longer use.

Clean Everything

A new home is a fresh start – so the last thing you’ll want to do when you unpack your belongings is to find everything is dusty and musty. Once you’ve decluttered your items, take some time before moving day to give everything a clean, so it’s ready for the new place.

Go through room by room and give everything a quick wipe, dust or a wash. Remember to get behind sofas and into the nooks and crannies of dining tables, chairs, and bookshelves. You might also want to wash your cushion covers and other upholstery so they’re fresh. This way, everything will be clean and pristine when you unpack it in your new home, making it much more welcoming.

Identify Valuable and Fragile Items

As you go through your items to declutter and clean, take note of anything that’s particularly valuable and/or fragile. These items will need some extra care to be taken when they’re packed up and transported. It’s usually best to put these aside so they can be packed first and separately to your other belongings. They will require specialist packing materials and labelling to ensure they’re protected throughout the journey.

It’s important to choose a reputable removals company like Britannia Movers International, so you know they have the expertise to safely transport your items. Our highly trained team can professionally pack your fragile and valuable items, making sure they’re protected during the move and giving you peace of mind that your belongings are looked after.

Estimate the Volume

If you’re using a removal company, you’ll need to work out the volume of your belongings so they can provide the required resources for your move. Britannia Movers International provides a free house removal survey so we can accurately assess what will be needed to ensure your move can be carried out successfully.

We can conduct the survey in person or via our Britannia Movers app for convenience. During the assessment, we can answer any questions you might have and also offer advice to help make the move as efficient and stress-free as possible.

Get Packing Materials

You’ll need the right packing materials to make sure your belongings arrive safely in your new home. You should look for quality packing materials, including boxes, bubble wrap, and tissue paper. You’ll also need packing tape and a felt tip pen so you can mark your boxes, making it easier to find and unpack items on the other side.

Britannia Movers can supply you with all the right packing materials for your move, including packing cartons made from 100% recycled materials, protective bags for mattresses and sofas, and special wardrobe cartons fitted with rails so your clothes can remain hanging as you move.
