Top Tips for Moving Home with Cats

Moving to a new home can be an exciting but overwhelming experience, not just for us, but for our pets as well. While we know that cats love boxes, the sight of their human packing up their possessions can trigger anxiety and confusion. Cats are creatures of habit and thrive on routines, so the disruption caused by a move can be particularly stressful for them. Ensuring your feline friend remains calm and comfortable during this transition is crucial for their well-being.

To help ease their anxiety and make the move as smooth as possible, here are some top tips that will help your cat adjust during your move:

  1. Prepare a Safe Space: Set up a designated quiet room in your home where your cat can retreat from the chaos of moving day. This space should be stocked with their essentials such as their food, fresh water, a comfortable bed, scratching post, their favourite toys and their litter box. Ensure this space is free from the noise and disruption of packing and loading. This will act as their sanctuary, providing a calm and familiar environment.
  2. Keep Their Routine: Maintaining consistency is key for reducing your cat’s stress. Stick to their regular feeding times, playtimes and sleeping schedules as closely as possible. Routine offers a sense of comfort, which can be very reassuring for your cat during a time of change. The familiarity of a daily routine helps to stabilize their stress levels and adapt more easily to their new environment.
  3. Introduce the Carrier Early: To help your cat associate the carrier with something positive, place it in a common area with treats, toys and bedding inside well before the moving day. This allows your cat to explore the carrier on their own terms and reduces anxiety associated with it. Often, cats link carriers with vet visits, so making the carrier a normal part of their environment with positive associations can help ease their worry when it’s time to use it on moving day.
  4. Update Their Microchip and ID Tags: Ensure that your cat’s microchip information and ID tags are updated with your new address and contact details, as this is crucial for their safety.
  5. Gradual Introduction to the New Home: When you first arrive at your new home, confine your cat to one room with their safe space set up. This allows them to get accustomed to their new environment in a controlled manner. Gradually open the door to other rooms over the course of a few days or weeks, giving your cat time to explore and adjust at their own pace. This gradual introduction helps prevent overwhelming them with too much change at once.
  6. Provide Comfort Items: Bring along familiar items from your old home, such as their favourite blanket, bed or toys. These items carry the comforting scent of their previous home and help them feel secure in their new surroundings.
  7. Stay Calm and Positive: Your cat is sensitive to your emotions, so try to remain calm and positive throughout the moving process. Your reassurance can help to reduce their anxiety. Spend extra time with your cat whenever you can, offering gentle affection and speaking softly.
  8. Consult Your Vet: If your cat seems particularly anxious or stressed, consult your vet for advice. They might recommend calming aids such as plug-in diffusers to help soothe your cat. Additionally, your vet may suggest other solutions or medications to help manage your cat’s anxiety during the move.

Remember, patience and a little extra care will help your cat settle into their new home before you know it.
